Cultural Heritage Information in digital media

Research initiative launched in 1998/1999 for developing enhanced usability and usages of digital information media systems for presentation, storage and publication of cultural heritage information. Concrete aim of the initiative is to study, test and adapt new digital IT/ICT technologies for use in cultural heritage sector. Despite disseminating results in scientific research reports, the initiative has strong affiliation in forwarding the research by creating and studying working end products in authentic environment. Technologies studied within the initiavive consist of multidimensional visualisation techniques, virtual realities, adaptive user interfaces, enhanced usage models, mobile and database applications. Research is centred along two main lines. The first (1) is the publication of cultural heritage information to the general public by using multimedia information systems. Another (2) line is the use of IT-technologies for management of digital archaeological cultural heritage information. The initiative has resulted in a number of proposals, reports, research reports and end products. Considerable portion of the research activities have been conducted under auspices of Aboa Vetus museum and in co-operation with PhD Kari Uotila. Isto Huvila has been participating in the project as an employed researcher and digital media designer by Aboa Vetus museum, and as a private researcher affiliated with the university institutions. key words: cultural heritage, information, digital media, technology, presentation, publication, usability Deliverables Manzuch, Zinaida, Huvila, Isto and Aparac-Jelusic, Tatjana: Digitization of Cultural Heritage.
